St. Gregory the Great, born around the year of Our Lord 540 in the noble city of Rome, entered the world amidst the twilight of empire and the gathering gloom of barbarian unrest. Of patrician lineage and refined education, he was destined for high station, serving first as Prefect of the City, a role of immense civil authority. Yet the splendours of office could not satisfy the yearning of his soul, which longed not for honor but for holiness.

Turning from worldly glory, Gregory forsook his dignities and converted his ancestral palace into a monastery dedicated to St. Andrew. There, clad in the humble habit of a monk, he embraced the cloister with fervor, immersing himself in prayer, fasting, and sacred study. Even in his retreat, however, providence called him forth. He was appointed papal ambassador to Constantinople, and later, in the year 590, unanimously elected to the Chair of St. Peter, a heavy burden he accepted with deep reluctance and holy fear.

“And so there are some, as we have said, enriched with great gifts, who, while they are ardent for the studies of contemplation only, shrink from serving to their neighbour’s benefit by preaching; they love a secret place of quiet, they long for a retreat for speculation. With respect to which conduct, they are, if strictly judged, undoubtedly guilty in proportion to the greatness of the gifts whereby they might have been publicly useful. For with what disposition of mind does one who might be conspicuous in profiting his neighbours prefer his own privacy to the advantage of others, when the Only-begotten of the supreme Father Himself came forth from the bosom of the Father into the midst of us all, that He might profit many?”
